The final estimation of the number and main population characteristics of the Steppe Eagle in the pilot regions of the UNDP/ GEF/MNR was ended

Steppe Eagle is a key species of steppe biome. It was chosen as an indicator for assessing the success of the project UNDP/ GEF/Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia “Improving the system and management of protected areas in the steppe biome of Russia “ (Steppe Project). The state of the nesting groupings of the steppe eagle characterizes the state of steppe ecosystems well, since this eagle uses few other biotopes, is sensitive to a number of characteristic anthropogenic influences on the steppe (plowing, application of pesticides, level of pasture load), demonstrating dependence on the state of a number of other key steppe species (saiga, gazelle, ground squirrels, etc.) and for its inhabitation requires fairly large steppe areas. This species is listed in the of Russia and of Red Data Books all subjects of Russia, so he requires the monitoring of the number and status of its populations, as well as special measures for species conservation.

Studies have shown the presence of a negative trend in the populations of the steppe eagle in Kalmykia and Orenburg region. Nesting density of eagles on the sites for which data are available both in 2010-2011 and in 2015 decreased by 25% in Kalmykia and 53% in the Orenburg region. The population number fell by 23% and 20.6%, respectively. In Dauria, there was a slight increase in numbers from 152 (114-180) to 219 (164-274) pairs with practically the same nesting density – 1.4 pairs / 100 square kilometers.
