VII International Conference on Birds of Prey and Owls of Northern Eurasia was ended in 24 September 2016

VII International Conference on Birds of Prey and Owls of Northern Eurasia “Birds of Prey in the Northern Eurasia: Problems and adaptations in current environment” was held in September 19-24, 2016 in Sochi, Russia, on the basis of Sochi National Park.

The Conference was attended by more than 80 raptologists from 6 countries – Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Estonia and Poland. Among the participants of the conference a significant part were young specialists, including undergraduate and graduate students who have made a significant contribution to the study of birds of prey.

The conference was very engaged: experts reported at the 7 thematic symposia (The current state of the fauna and populations of birds of prey in Northern Eurasia; the study and protection of eagles in North Eurasia; population trend and conservation of falcons in Northern Eurasia; adaptive aspects of the ecology of birds of prey; the study and conservation of owls in North Eurasia; status of populations of birds of prey and owls in the regions of Northern Eurasia; distribution, population trend and ecology of harriers in Northern Eurasia) and held a work-shop “Falconry and conservation of birds of prey”.

To the beginning of the conference Proceedings of the Conference (two books) were issued:

The Organizing Committee of the Conference, having considered the reports of the participants, determined the two best reports, which caused the greatest interest of the audience:

The Conference has adopted a resolution, which included proposals on the problem “Birds and Power Lines”, tagging of the birds of prey, international cooperation between experts on birds of prey and other important issues on the study and conservation of birds of prey. The final text of the resolution will be published later.

The next VIII conference on Birds of Prey and Owls of Northern Eurasia is offered to hold in the Voronezh region in the Voronezh State Nature Reserve or in the Crimea. The Committee will consider in detail the offers for a year and choose the most appropriate place.

The meeting of the Working Group on Birds of Prey and Owls of Northern Eurasia was held within the conference on 22 September, 2016. V.P. Belik reported the general results of scientific and organizational activities of the group for the 4 years since the VI Conference in Krivoy Rog (Ukraine) and preparing of essays in the book “Birds of Northern Eurasia”.

The meeting has decided to rename the Working Group on Birds of Prey and Owls of Northern Eurasia (WGBPONE) to the Working Group on Raptors of Northern Eurasia (WGRNE), and also elected heads and Bureau of the group as follows:
Chairman: Belik V.P.
Honorary President: Galushin V.M.
The Group Bureau, in addition to the old members is also included: Levin A.S. (Kazakhstan), Babushkin M.V., Bekmansurov A.D., Enaleev I.R., Karyakin I.V., Korepov M.V., Sorokin A.G., Tilba P.A. (Russia).
