    The first datalogger-tagged Egyptian Vulture from Dagestan starts a migration

    From 22 to 24 of July 2017, 4 nestlings of Egyptian Vulture from 3 nests were tagged with GPS/GSM loggers, for the first time in Russia. The nests were located on sandstone rocks and on cliffs of Narat-Tube ridge, not far from the cluster “Sarykumskiye barkhany” of Dagestan Nature Reserve. On the 5th of September, the eldest nestling starts it migration!

    The account of the Saker Falcons in pre-migration period in Altai mountains was completed, and the tracking of falcons with loggers continues

    Field work in the Altai Republic has been completed. One of the main goals of the August trip was to observe the migration of the Saker Falcon in the zone of movement of birds tagged with GPS/GSM loggers. 15 birds (13 young and 2 adults) were counted. The tracking of the female (tagged June 17) is continuing. For the month from July 16 to August 11, this bird expanded its area of movement (MCP) from 8 to 8,815 square kilometers, and flew over this period more than 1,5 thousand km.

    First time in Russia: four Egyptian Vultures were tagged with GPS/GSM loggers

    At the end of July of 2017, Igor Karyakin and Rinur Bekmansurov – ornithologists from the Russian Raptor Research and Conservation Network visited Dagestan Nature Reserve, cluster “Sakykumskie barkhany” to tag Egyptian Vultures inhabited Nature Reserve and its surroundings. Four birds were tagged with GPS/GPM loggers made by Aquila (Poland) and color rings of Russian Raptor Research and Conservation Network.

    Expedition to study the Central Kazakhstan population of the Steppe Eagle was completed

    From June 22 to July 18 in the Central Kazakhstan were large-scale account of the Steppe Eagles. The work was carried out by AСBK in cooperation with specialists of the Russian Raptor Research and Conservation Network and Sibecocenter LLC. Financial support for these works, which are of major environmental importance, was obtained from TNK Kazchrome

    Altai Saker Falcons are tagged by transmitters

    As part of the continuation of the project to revive the Saker Falcon in Southern Siberia (news on the first results of the project see on link), three Saker Falcons were tagged with GPS/GSM logges of the Polish company Ecotone. The first falcon was tagged on June 11, the other two on June 17, 2017.

    On February 27, 2017 a female of the Steppe Eagle named Ada, marked by a transmitter in 2016 in the Orenburg region (Russia), began its first spring migration from wintering grounds in Ethiopia

    The 10 Saker (6 males and 4 females) tagged dataloggers in the Altai-Sayan region in 2016. After poaching season only 4 falcons (3 males and 1 female) continued migration.

    On October 13, 2016, a female Steppe Eagle (Aquila nipalensis) named Eva from the Orenburg region, gaining strength and fattening in the foothills of Kun-Lun in China, went to the most difficult route on her migration path – became cross the highest mountains of Eurasia – Kun-Lun, Karakorum and the Himalayas

    Ada began migration on August 27 along the traditional migratory route of steppe eagles from the Western Kazakhstan population – through the Aral Sea to the south. Already on August 30-31, Ada passed along the Aral Sea, and on September 3 was in Iran, covering 2,000 km in 8 days.

    Until August 25, Eve kept on the nesting site, moving on an area of about 50 square kilometers. On August 25, 2016, the eagle started migration eastward – for 5 days Eve passed through the entire north of Kazakhstan, covering 1329 km, then turned along the Irtysh to the south and on August 31 it was already south of the Zaisan lake.

    Within the framework of the project “Eagles of Russia” in July 2016, 3 Steppe Eagles and 6 Imperial Eagles are tagged with GSM/GPS loggers of companies Ecotone, Aquila and ARGOS/GPS transmitters from Microwave Telemetry, Inc.

    Evidence of the presence of steppe eagles of different subspecies on the same wintering areas has become apparent

    Data obtained in 2014 and 2015 allow take a fresh look at the facts of registration of large steppe eagles similar the eastern subspecies breeding in the range of the western subspecies. Two rings were returned from the eastern subspecies of the Steppe Eagle on the Afro-Eurasian migration route (in Iran) and one return from the western Steppe Eagle from Orenburg region in Baluchistan (Pakistan), actually at the end of the road to the Indo-Pakistan wintering place.

    (Русский) За 60 лет только для популяций ушастой совы установлена связь между Британией и Россией – два возврата британских ушастых сов из России в 1977 г. (Марийская Республика) и 1992 г. (Псковская область) и 4 возврата российских сов (все из Калининградской области) из Британии в 1960, 1979, 1983 и 1987 гг. Для всех других видов пернатых хищников связь между странами не установлена.

    We are currently monitoring the migrations of two females born in 2013, a Greater Spotted Eagle by the name of Zava from the Zavyalovsky Reserve in Altai Krai and a Steppe Eagle by the name of Dusya from the Ust-Kansky basin in the Altai Republic. News on the movements of the birds appears regularly on the site and in the forum.

    (Русский) Орлы – уязвимая группа птиц, которым угрожает ряд антропогенных факторов, таких как смерть от поражения от электротока на ЛЭП, отравление, браконьерский отстрел и т.п. Однако достаточно сложно получить информацию о реальном влиянии этих факторов, чтобы спланировать охрану этих видов. В рамках проекта планируется развитие Сети по цветному кольцеванию, а также по практическим мероприятиям для охраны орлов в России.
